Times change

Thursday morning, and a cloud of smoke still hangs a few blocks to the south. The wind changed overnight, and a layer of dust and soot blankets lower Manhattan.

A few delis open in Soho, and by evening their shelves look thin. At night the cloud of soot is lit from below. The broken facade of one of the towers is visible down Church St.

Bridges and tunnels remain closed, and the city is still shut below 14th St.
