I’ve been up to the observation deck of the south tower three times. The first time was in March 2000 with my youngest brother.

My most recent visit was on Labor Day, eight days before the attack. It was a beautiful day, and I was with a few friends after brunch in Tribeca. None of them had been to the towers before.

When we stepped onto the plaza between the two towers I spread my arms and said “Welcome to ground zero of the next war.”
Just over a week later I would be proven horribly right.
